‘THE METHOD’
For Establishing
The Beginning
New Moon Of New Moons
With THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning Of Each New Moon already defined,
our road to THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons, i.e. the 1st Month of the Year, is already partially paved.
If you haven’t already read THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning Of Each New Moon you can do so by clicking here.
Three Non-negotiable Parameters
However, there are a few non-negotiable parameters that must also be recognized to guide our ongoing journey toward understanding and correctly utilizing THE MASTER’S CLOCK For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons.
-
THE METHOD must use the Sun, Moon and Stars according to Genesis 1:14-16 and simultaneously serve both hemispheres of the earth.
-
THE METHOD must be understood to be totally independent from a need for aviv barley for the First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month.
-
THE METHOD must be understood to be totally independent of changes in the mechanisms of THE MASTER’S CLOCK that have occurred in the past and will occur in the future. The present is not the key to the past or the future.
So then please allow me to explain why these three parameters must be acknowleged in THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons, i.e. the beginning of the New Year. I hope you will begin to see how self-evident these parameters are.
The Primal Rule
Of The
Sun, Moon and Stars
Firstly, it is self-evident from Scripture that the only means given to govern time is the Sun, Moon and Stars.
And Elohim said, “Let lights come to be in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and appointed times, and for days and years,
And let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth.” And it came to be so.
And Elohim made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars.
And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And Elohim saw that it was good.
And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the fourth day. (Genesis 1:14-19 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
Nowhere in Scripture is mankind given any authority to govern time according to his own manmade traditions. Nowhere in Scripture are we commanded to follow a calculated calendar that manipulates the beginning of months with ‘Postponement Rules’ as does the Hillel II calculated calendar from the fourth century A.D. Hillel II and the Jewish Sanhedrin usurped the authority of the Creator to govern time and the followers of Hillel II are busted for their hijack as they give greater esteem to Hillel II’s calculations and ‘Postponement Rules’, i.e. ‘The Traditions of Men’, than the GREAT LIGHTS of the Creator’s Sun, Moon and Stars to reckon time.
What we need to ask ourselves is, "Is there a method that can be gleaned from Scripture that uses the mechanisms of the Sun, Moon and Stars to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons?" To be honest the Scriptural evidence for that method is scant at best but we’re not left totally destitute. There may be a foundation that we can place our faith upon.
The Turn of the Year!
There is a Hebrew word that is used to define the completion or end of a cycle and is used to mark the ‘turn of the year’. The word is ‘TEQUWPHAW’ and as we’ll see the word ‘TEQUWPHAW’ is used to describe both the spring of the year when kings go to war and the autumn of the year when the fall crops are harvested. In both cases it's the same word, often translated as ‘turn of the year’ or ‘year’s end'! This little detail, which will fly under the radar of most students of Scripture, clearly associates itself with a celestial phenomenon known as the equinoxes, which occur in the spring and the autumn.

úÌÀ÷åÌôÈä tᵉqûwphâh, tek-oo-faw'; or תְּקֻפָה tᵉquphâh; from H5362; a revolution, i.e. (of the sun) course, (of time) lapse:—circuit, come about, end.
Tequwphah is used in 2 Chronicles 24:23 to note the ‘turn of the year’ in the ‘spring’ when kings went to war...
And it came to pass at the end H8622 of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
Tequwphah is also used in Exodus 34:22 to note the ‘turn of the year’ in the autumn when the fall harvest festival took place...
And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end. H8622
There is also the Hebrew phrase ‘Shaneh Teshubah’ that is translated nearly the same as ‘Tequwphah’ and is seen as an easy comparison. We can find that phrase used in 2 Samuel 11:1...
And it came to pass, after the year H8141 was expired, H8666 at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
Here again the ‘turn of the year’ in the spring, when kings went to war, is being noted, which can also be seen in 1 Kings 20:22 & 26, and 1 Chronicles 20:1.
‘Shaneh Teshubah’ is also used in 2 Chonicles 36:10 when this same phrase is being used to note the ‘turn of the year’ but this time to reference the autumn...
And when the year H8141 was expired, H8666 king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
So what can be made of ‘Tequwphah’ and ‘Shaneh Teshubah’? At the very least we can take away the fact that both ‘Tequwphah’ and ‘Shaneh Teshubah’ refer to both the Spring and the Autumn seasons and there is only one celestial phenomena that meets that defining criteria... the equinox! The Vernal Equinox in the Spring and the Autumnal Equinox in the Fall.
Considering the phrase ‘Shaneh Teshubah’ along side ‘Tequwphaw’ gives a sense of a season of time, a transitional period of time that is associated with the equinoxes. From my point of view this ‘turn of the year’ in the spring would begin with the Vernal Equinox and end with the first Full Moon beacon to rise ‘after’ the Vernal Equinox marking the New Year. ‘The turn of the year’ in the fall is a bit more problematic in that the Autumnal Equinox may not always occur before the Full Moon beacon of the 7th New Moon. In a perfect world this problem would not exist and won’t exist once the year returns to 12-30 Day Months and 360 Days per year in the near future. Nevertheless, the months are counted from the 1st New Moon to rise ‘after’ the Vernal Equinox all the way to the 1st Full Moon to rise ‘after’ the Vernal Equinox the following spring resulting in either 12 or 13 New Moons in the yearly cycle.
The Scriptural support for a method for determining The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is indeed scant but it is there for those who are willing to do the digging and as I so often like to quote...
It is the esteem of Elohim to hide a matter, And the esteem of sovereigns to search out a matter. (Proverbs 25:2 The Scriptures 2009)
Be a sovereign!
‘THIS’ New Moon
Secondly, it is self-evident that, if the Sun, Moon and Stars determine the 1st Day of the 1st Month, there is nothing more to talk about! The Aviv Spring Barley is of absolutely no influence! Those who demand Aviv Spring Barley for the First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month before they proclaim the New Year have got the cart before the ox! Nowhere in Scripture is the Karaite tradition of going out and inspecting the barley fields of Israel in the Spring justified. The Karaites are guilty of ignoring the primal rule of the Sun, Moon and Stars to begin the New Year. The Karaites are also condemned in their self-proclaimed, self-justified barley inspection in which they then become the arbiter of time in their own minds, stiff-arming the Creator of Time in the process. If we have THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons correct according to the Sun, Moon and Stars and the Spring Barley is ready for harvest before the First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month that’s great, if it’s not then maybe Israel needs to do a little soul searching as to why! Up until now many people have demanded THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons to ‘guarantee’ ripe barley for the First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month when they have no right to do so. THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is ‘anchored’ in the Sun, Moon and Stars! That method is specific and there are no manmade ‘options’! It is what it is and we must yield to that reality. Let’s start our search for Scriptural truth with Moses, Aharon and YHWH just before the Exodus out of Egypt to resolve this issue...
And YHWH spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon in the land of Mitsrayim, saying,
“This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you, it is the first new moon of the year for you. (Exodus 12:1-2 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
Notice anything missing? No? Read it again...
The words ‘aviv’ and ‘barley’ are never mentioned... Nope... NEVER NOT ONCE!
It is clear, to me at least, according to this particular translation, which I have chosen with great intent, that YHWH had this conversation with Mosheh and Aharon after sundown outside their dwellings looking up to the heavens, where YHWH placed the Sun, Moon and Stars to mark the beginning of the New Year, drawing particular awareness to the moon that particular evening.
“This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you...”
Please note how definite that verse is. It is speaking of a specific New Moon. It is not saying, “This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you, unless of course the Spring Barley won’t be ripe for First Fruits, then it would be the next New Moon.” NO! Exodus 12:2 IS NOT saying any such thing! The verse is speaking of a specific New Moon and as you look up to view that specific New Moon we have to ask ourselves, “What is it that leads to the specificity of “This new moon”?” There are no man-made ‘options’! There are no man-made ‘guarantees’! There are also precious few clues from Scripture to determine why “This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you...”! We are left without hard evidence for the very method required to determine The Beginning New Moon of New Moons! This ambiguity will prove extraordinarily frustrating and yet it may be the very means by which the goats and sheep are separated, you have to be willing to do a little digging!
Now let me quote the same verse in the King James Version, let’s see if we’re left with the same impression...
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,
This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. (Exodus 12:1-2 KJV)
Does that give you any sense of YHWH, Moses and Aaron considering the Sun, Moon and Stars to beacon the New Year according to Genesis 1? Nope, no it doesn’t. In fact this translation might leave the reader to wonder what distinct thing could be used according to this conversation to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons by. Oh look, all of the plants have just turned green! That’s it! But wait... it doesn’t actually say that... does it!
One of the things we need to remember as we consider Exodus 12:1-2 and what YHWH was sharing with Mosheh and Aharon is that at that time the year was still 360 days long with 12-30 day months, a remnant of His original Creation Calendar. It would not be until approximately 705 B.C.E. that the year changes from 360 to 365.25 days demanding occasional 13-month years. What we need to ask ourselves is what is the common denominator between the time when YHWH restored the calendar to Israel through Mosheh and Aharon while still in Egypt and how Israel maintains calendar sanity once the year changes from 360 to 365 days all the way up to the present day and beyond? There has been at least one constant that has transcended the changes that have occurred in the time keeping mechanisms of THE MASTER’S CLOCK since the time of the Flood of Noah, which of course includes the time in which the Torah was written by Mosheh and extends to this very day!
Mosheh and Aharon NEVER had to contend with the issue as to whether the Spring Barley was aviv and would be ready for First Fruits on the 16th Day of the 1st Month in order to establish The Beginning New Moon of New Moons. It is literally a non-issue. As a matter of fact, from the restoration of YHWH’s time keeping methods via the conversation recorded between YHWH, Mosheh and Aharon in Exodus 12:1-2 just before Israel leaves Egypt until Joshua finally takes Israel into the Promised Land 40 years later there weren’t any First Fruit offerings of Spring Barley to worry about. It is only once they enter into the Promised Land that Spring Barley comes into play. The question is, Should Spring Barley be the driving force in determining The Beginning New Moon of New Moons 16 days before the First Fruits offering is to be brought to the priest and offered to YHWH once they entered into The Promised Land? After all, they managed to establish The Beginning New Moon of New Moons for 40 years without having to provide a First Fruits offering of Spring Barley and there is no mention of it being a problem for them! Furthermore there is no mention of any judgment upon the ripeness of the Spring Barley once they entered into The Promised Land. Wouldn’t you think that the first years in trying to adopt a renewed way of keeping time, those first years in The Promised Land, would be the most contentious if the ripeness of the Spring Barley is actually used to determine the beginning of the New Year? Especially considering such a ‘subjective’ judgment as determining whether the barley would be ripe for First Fruits over '2 weeks’ BEFORE it is actually offered! Even today the number of arguments regarding the aviv stage of the barley and its abundance continue ad nauseam. This ‘subjective’ difference of opinion only increases if the New Moon should happen to occur during the time when the barley begins to accelerate its ripening near the end of its maturation, which is often the case. And yet there is not one mention of The Beginning New Moon of New Moons being established by projecting the ripeness of the Spring Barley onto the New Year decision making process. That fact needs to be taken seriously. I’m sorry folks, but The Astronomically and Agriculturally Corrected Hebrew Calendar is a fraud!
It’s Conditional!
If The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is established according to the Sun, Moon and Stars how can we then be assured the Spring Barley will be ready for the First Fruits offering? Whose job is it to make sure the ball doesn’t get dropped? These two sets of Scripture should make it obvious...
>>If<< you walk in My laws and guard My commands, and shall do them,
>>then<< I shall give you rain in its season, and the land shall yield its crops, and the trees of the field yield their fruit. (Leviticus 26:3-4 The Scriptures 2009)
And then again, just as a reminder before they enter into The Promised Land!
“For the land which you are going in to possess is not like the land of Mitsrayim from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot, as a vegetable garden,
but the land which you are passing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of the heavens,
a land which YHWH your Elohim looks after. The eyes of YHWH your Elohim are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the latter end of the year.
‘And it shall be that >>if<< you diligently obey My commands which I command you today, to love YHWH your Elohim and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your being,
>>then<< I shall give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, and you shall gather in your grain, and your new wine, and your oil. (Deuteronomy 11:10-14 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
If... Then... Do you suppose this would have anything to do with whether or not the Spring Barley would be ready for the First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month? If there were ever a time when the Spring Barley wasn’t ready for the First Fruits offering would it be because YHWH went back on His word? Or... would it be because Israel has ALWAYS been a stiff-necked nation; rebellious, adulterous and unrepentant?
Why is it that there is no longer a Temple?
Why is it that there is no longer a Priesthood?
Why is it that Israel has been exiled from the Promised Land once again?
The Answer: Israel has indeed proven itself to be a stiff-necked people who rejected the commandments of Messiah Yahusha, the Creator and Redeemer Himself! YHWH’s response has been to take away Israel’s Rosh Chodesh, 7th Day Sabbath and Annual Moedim, including First Fruits! We clearly see that recorded for us in Lamentations 2:6 and Hosea 2:11.
He has demolished His booth like a garden, He has destroyed His place of meeting. YHWH has made the appointed times and Sabbaths to be forgotten in Tsiyon, and despises sovereign and priest in His raging displeasure. (Lamentations 2:6 The Scriptures 2009)
“And now I shall uncover her shame before the eyes of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her from My hand.
“And I shall cause all her rejoicing, her festivals, her New Moons, and her Sabbaths, even all her appointed times, to cease...” (Hosea 2:10-11 The Scriptures 2009)
Here is a little known fact... via the Roman 10th Legion YHWH has "demolished His booth like a garden", i.e. He destroyed the temple so completely, so thoroughly, that the Jews of today do not know where it was originally located. Oh, they think they know, but they have lost sight of the true temple location believing that the Roman Fortress Antonia is the remains of the temple mount! The true temple complex location would be 600 feet south of the southern wall of Fortress Antonia in the middle of the City of David above the Gihon Spring! (downhill and to the right of the walled corner of Fortress Antonia pictured in the photo below) A prophecy in Amos makes it clear that the temple mount, as Fortress Antonia is presently called, cannot be the true temple location...
Therefore, because of you, Tsiyon is ploughed like a field, and Yerushallyim becomes heaps, and the mountain of the House like a wooded height. (Micah 3:12 The Scriptures 2009)
This is confirmed by Messiah Yahusha in the gospel of Matthew...
And going out, Yeshua went away from the Set-apart Place, and His taught ones came near to point out to Him the buildings of the Set-apart Place. And Yeshua said to them, “Do you not see all these? Truly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, at all, which shall not be thrown down.” (Matthew 24:1&2 The Scriptures 2009)
These prophecies have been fulfilled according to the historical writings of Eusebius, Josephus, Epiphanius, Gregory of Nyssa, and Eleazer Ben Yair (The Zealot Jewish leader at Massada). Now ask yourself, “If the Jews have lost track of a landmark as important as the location for the Temple of YHWH, could they also have lost track of the location of YHWH’s weekly Sabbath, Rosh Chodesh and the beginning of the New Year?”
In what may be seen as the irony of ironies the Jews pray to the western wall of the Roman Empire’s 'Fortress Antonia' on 'Saturn's Day', the 7th Day of the Roman Empire’s pagan planetary god calendar! The answer to their prayers will be an Anti-Messiah that proclaims what the Jews already believe! This is what it looks like to be blinded by THE ALMIGHTY!
And Indeed... YHWH has taken away the Appointed Times, i.e. His calendar, but lest you think that’s all He’s taken away now look at what the preceding verse in Hosea says...
“And she did not acknowledge that I gave her grain, and new wine, and oil, and increased her silver and gold which they prepared for Ba’ al.
“Therefore I shall turn back and shall take my grain in its time and My new wine in its appointed time, and I shall take away My wool and My linen covering her nakedness. (Hosea 2:8-9 The Scriptures 2009)
Please pay special attention to what you’re told there in Hosea 2:9a where He says, “I shall turn back and shall take my grain in its time...” This does not say the fields of Israel would stop producing grain altogether but they would stop producing grain ‘in its time’ according to the Sun, Moon and Stars! In other words if you continue to give thanks to Ba al for the gifts I've provided you with you’ll no longer have a First Fruits offering to Me on the Appointed Day! Don’t allow that extraordinary point to be lost on you. By the way, do you know who Ba al is? He is the god of Saturday... Saturn’s Day... Saturn, a.k.a. Satan! Dare we think the Spring Barley should be ripe by the 16th Day of the 1st Month as long as Israel continues to worship on Ba’ al’s Day, i.e. Saturday, a.k.a Satan’s Day?
In Deuteronomy 11:10-14 quoted further above we’re clearly told that the very means by which the fruit of the Promised Land is brought forth, i.e. rain in its season, depends upon Israel’s obedience to the commands of YHWH. IT IS ‘CONDITIONAL’! If YHWH controls the rain based upon Israel’s obedience then He controls the sun, wind and soil temperature too!
There is no need here to go looking for controversy when it will come to visit on it’s own accord if we’re willing to open our eyes. If the Sun, Moon and Stars are the means by which The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is reckoned then it doesn’t make a nickel’s worth of difference if the Spring Barley is ready or not! If Israel wants to consistently have Spring Barley to offer to YHWH as First Fruits it needs to recognize Yahusha as their Messiah and obey 'His' commandments including utilizing the Sun, Moon and Stars to mark the Moedim, especially Rosh Chodesh, the 7th Day Sabbath and the New Year. In doing so Israel will find favor with YHWH and He will then bring the sunlight and rain which will then bring the Spring Barley on time to offer as a First Fruits offering on the 16th Day of the 1st Month marked by the Sun, Moon and Stars. It is that simple!
When will the ‘grain in its season’ be restored so that a First Fruits offering can consistently be waved on the 16th Day of the 1st New Moon according to the Sun, Moon and Stars? Brothers and Sisters I don’t expect that to consistently happen until all Israel says, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of Yahuah!"
Israel Becomes Her Own God!
I found an interesting letter (www.franknelte.net/article.php?article_id=43#) on the Internet written by the DIRECTOR OF FIELD CROPS DEPARTMENT, of the EXTENSION SERVICE of the MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, of the STATE OF ISRAEL. The date of the letter is June 8th 1983; here is an excerpt from the letter that caught my eye.
“In the Talmud, it is mentioned that there were years that the barley was not yet ripe at Passover. In order to be able to bring the Omer sacrifice of barley in time to the Temple, they used to sow barley upon some flat roofs in the Jericho valley, which would be ready and apt to the Sacrifice on the Passover.”
I find that to be stunning! What should their response have been? Their response to there not having been ripe barley for a First Fruits offering should have been nothing less than a national outcry calling for repentance! But... rather than acknowledge and address the problem as to why the barley wasn’t ripe (lack of obedience to the commandments), they stepped further into disobedience and began to control the environment in which the barley grew guaranteeing the barley to be ripe in time for the First Fruits offering regardless of when they were keeping it and in spite of their disobedience! In essence they were saying, “If you won’t provide ripe barley for First Fruits we will!” They literally became their own god!
When Does The Harvest Begin?
Let’s take a look at the commandment regarding First Fruits from Leviticus 23...
And YHWH spoke to Mosheh, saying,
“Speak to the children of Yisráěl, and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest.
‘And he shall wave the sheaf before YHWH, for your acceptance. On the morrow after the Sabbath the priest waves it.
‘And on that day when you wave the sheaf, you shall prepare a male lamb a year old, a perfect one, as an ascending offering to YHWH,
and its grain offering: two-tenths of an ěphah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to YHWH, a sweet fragrance, and its drink offering: one-fourth of a hin of wine.
‘And you do not eat bread or roasted grain or fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your Elohim - a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. (Leviticus 23:9-14 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
Clearly this commandment is talking to ‘national’ Israel when they first come into the Promised Land as a nation. We’re literally talking about just a few days time between their crossing over the Jordan River into the Promised Land and presenting a wave sheaf of the First Fruits of the Spring Barley harvest, as we will see in Joshua.
It is interesting to note in Joshua 3:15 this quote...
-now the Yarděn overflows all its banks during all the time of harvest- (Joshua 3:15b The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
What is interesting to me is that there is no distinction made between the harvest of those who were being dispossessed and the harvest of the Israelites that was about to begin as they overtook the land they were crossing over into. The point being the Jordan River flooded during the entire harvest season, which was already underway. In other words, once the grain is ripe it is harvested regardless of who is doing the harvesting. The quote above was made during the crossing of the Jordan River on the 10th Day of the 1st Month.
Allow me to quote Leviticus 23 verse 10 once again...
“Speak to the children of Yisráěl, and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest. (Leviticus 23:10 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
What that verse is saying to me is, ‘You shall begin to reap its harvest when you come into the land.’ They came into the land on the 10th Day of the 1st Month!
Furthermore, the command to reap the land’s harvest is made without limitation or qualifier. Throughout Scripture when offerings and sacrifices are made it was important to bring the best you had as is seen in the Passover Lamb selection, it was to be perfect. That gives me the sense of sorting out the best from the numbers of lambs that you had. Should I think Israel went into the Promised Land and cut a single sheaf of barley from the edge of a field and brought that as a First Fruits offering to the priest? Or would it make more sense to think Israel began the harvest of the Promised Land in full force with each head of household bringing the best sheaf of barley, of the many sheaves they would have had, as their First Fruits offering to the priest?
Allow me to quote Leviticus 23 verse 14 once again...
‘And you do not eat bread or roasted grain or fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your Elohim - a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. (Leviticus 23:14 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
Notice anything missing? Although there is a commandment here to not eat any fresh grain until after the wave sheaf of First Fruits is offered there is no commandment to withhold the harvest until the day the wave sheaf of First Fruits is offered! As a matter of fact the commandment to not eat of the fresh grain makes much more sense if there is fresh grain available because it has already been harvested! In other words, ‘Don’t eat any of the barley you’ve harvested until the First Fruits offering has been presented on the 16th Day of the 1st Month.’
When Israel entered into the Promised Land they abided by this commandment.
And the children of Yisráěl camped in Gilgal, and performed the Pěsah on the fourteenth day of the new moon at evening on the desert plains of Yeriho.
And they ate of the stored grain of the land on the morrow after the Pěsah, unleavened bread and roasted grain on this same day.
And the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the stored grain of the land. And the children of Yisráěl no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Kena an that year. (Joshua 5:10-12 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
Clearly, they ate of the ‘stored grain’ of the land, i.e. last year’s harvest. The new harvest would have still been standing in sheaves in the fields or on the threshing floors as the process of harvesting continued.
Since the commandment in Leviticus 23:9-14 says nothing about a restriction on harvesting before the First Fruits offering where do we get the idea that we shouldn’t harvest the barley until the day the First Fruits offering is made? It comes from Deuteronomy 16:9...
“Count seven weeks for yourself. Begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the grain. (Deuteronomy 16:9 The Scriptures 2009)
I have had an issue with Deuteronomy 16:9 for quite some time. The reason being it doesn’t accurately, much less fully, repeat the original commandment in Leviticus 23:15-16 which reads...
‘And from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, you shall count for yourselves seven completed Sabbaths.
‘Until the morrow after the seventh Sabbath you count fifty days, then you shall bring a new grain offering to YHWH. (Leviticus 23:15-16 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
I am confident that the count should be ‘seven Sabbaths complete’ according to Lunar Sabbath reckoning, which totals ‘over’ 50 days, and THEN another 50 days are to be counted. Deuteronomy 16:9 does not appear to allow for that however. It would be easy to dismiss my belief in a 100+ day count to Shavuot but there are several extraordinarily good reasons as to why I continue to cling to it. So I continue to have an issue with Deuteronomy 16:9 and now I have a second issue with this verse. Is it a matter of reading Deuteronomy 16:9 too literally? When Deuteronomy 16:9 says, “from the time”, since it just spoke of ‘weeks’, is “from the time" a reference to the week prior to the First Fruits offering when the harvest would have naturally begun? Should the 7 Week count to Shavuot follow the week prior to the First Fruits offering when the harvest began? That would make sense. Or is there something else going on? The lying pen of the Scribes (Jeremiah 8:8)? I don’t know but I’ve got my ‘heads up’ on!
The original commandment in Leviticus 23:9-14 mentioned no commandment to not harvest the grain until the 16th Day of the 1st Month but in Deuteronomy 16:9, when read literally, it appears to restrict the harvest until the day of the First Fruits offering by saying, “Begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the grain.” Riding the back of the Leviticus commandment to begin the count of ‘seven weeks complete’ the day of the wave sheaf offering on the day of First Fruits the Deuteronomy 16:9 commandment then effectively restricts any harvest until the ‘seven weeks complete’ count begins on the 16th Day of the 1st Month. The problem here is that such an interpretation adds to the Leviticus commandment and appears to contradict Mark 4:29, which forcefully declares the harvest should begin as soon as the grain is ripe!
The landowner in the historical nation of Israel didn’t have an option as to when he harvested the barley. If he waited too long the barley grain’s attachment to the stalk would become fragile and would fall off the stalk as the reapers swung their sickles to cut the stalks of grain. Once the grain was dislodged from the stalk and had fallen to the ground it was forever lost, it could no longer be harvested. With that being the case it should be no surprise then to read from the parables of Messiah Yahusha in Mark chapter four these words...
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. (Mark 4:26-29 KJV emphasis mine)
For even further emphasis I’d like to quote verse 29 from a few other translations.
but, as soon as the crop is ready, immediately he ‘puts in the sickle because harvest has come’.” (Mark 4:29 20cNT emphasis mine)
But when the fruit is ripe, straightway he putteth forth the sickle, because the harvest is come. (Mark 4:29 ASV emphasis mine)
But when the grain is ready, he quickly sends men to get it cut, because the time for cutting has come. (Mark 4:29 BBE emphasis mine)
But when the grain is ripe, he immediately starts cutting with his sickle because the harvest time has come.” (Mark 4:29 ISV emphasis mine)
But when the crop permits, he sends in the sickle right away, because the harvest has come.” (Mark 4:29 LEB emphasis mine)
But no sooner is the crop ripe, than he sends the reapers, because the time of harvest has come.” (Mark 4:29 WMTH-ME emphasis mine)
As has been the case in the past we vacillate according to our human reasoning as to whether the New Year should begin after the 12th Month or whether we should add a 13th Month, it happens every year! Maybe you’re looking out your front door and there is still snow on the ground! This vacillation stems from our rejection of Genesis 1 where the Sun, Moon and Stars are assigned the task of beaconing the New Year or our ignorance of knowing how to read The Master’s Clock. Instead of following the ways of The Creator we then turn to the traditions of men and seek a ‘guarantee’ that the Spring Barley in Israel will be ripe via inspecting the fields for aviv barley late in the 12th Month. I can only hope and pray that what I am saying in this article will help you to realize just how asinine it is to continue to wait for reports of aviv barley before we make a decision as to when The Beginning New Moon of New Moons, i.e. the New Year, will begin.
First Fruits... According To The Blessing!
In the 58th Chapter of Isaiah we’re told that Israel would be as a ‘watered garden’ if the people would show compassion on the poor and downcast, I would encourage you to read the entire chapter.
“Then YHWH would guide you continually, and satisfy your being in drought, and strengthen your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. (Isaiah 58:11 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
In Jeremiah 31 we’re given a word picture prophecy of what will come to be in the Millennial Reign.
“And they shall come in and shall sing on the height of Tsiyon, and stream to the goodness of YHWH, for grain and for new wine and for oil, and for the young of the flock and the heard. And their being shall be like a well-watered garden, and never languish again. (Jeremiah 31:12 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
All of which reminds me of what used to be, as Lot looked over the plain of the Jordan River...
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of the Yarděn, that it was well watered everywhere - before YHWH destroyed Sedom and Amorah - like the garden of YHWH, like the land of Mitsrayim as you go toward Tso ar. (Genesis 13:10 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
I’ve toured Israel and no one in their right mind would mistake the plain of the Jordan as the Garden of Eden. Something has changed and it has involved more than just YHWH striking Sodom and Gomorrah although the reasons are no doubt related.
We desperately need to understand that the First Fruits offering of Spring Barley is no different than the first fruits of wheat at Shavuot and the first fruits of the fall harvest which would include grapes, olives, pomegranates, figs and dates at Sukkot. They are all blessings that come from YHWH as Deuteronomy 16:16-17 proclaims...
“Three times a year all your males appear before YHWH your Elohim in the place which He chooses: at the Festival of Matzot, and at the Festival of Shabu’ot, and at the Festival of Sukkot. And none should appear before YHWH empty-handed,
but each one with the gift of his hand, according to the blessing of YHWH your Elohim which He has given you. (Deuteronomy 16:16-17 The Scriptures 2009 emphasis mine)
It would certainly be appropriate to ask, ‘IF’ the harvest couldn’t begin until the 16th Day of the 1st Month and every male had to travel to Jerusalem for the Passover on the 14th, which could be a few days journey, ‘THEN’ how is it that “none should appear before YHWH empty-handed” on the 16th Day when a sheaf of Spring Barley needed to be offered and waved by the priests on your behalf “according to the blessing of YHWH your Elohim which He has given you?” The men would already have left their homes and fields to travel to Jerusalem for the Passover festival on the 14th, there would be no way for them to bring a sheaf of Spring Barley for the First Fruits offering if they couldn’t harvest the grain ‘BEFORE’ they had to leave home to be in Jerusalem by the 14th!
The bottom line here is extraordinarily self-evident... ‘IF’ Israel wants to insure there will be a First Fruits offering to YHWH of Spring Barley on the 16th Day of the 1st Month ‘THEN’ Israel needs to recognize Yahusha as the Messiah, begin the New Year according to the Sun, Moon and Stars as instructed in Genesis 1 via ‘the one and only’ New Moon beacon in the Spring of the year in order for the Annual Moedim to fall upon their individual appointed times AND dive head long into ‘teshuva’ and ‘repent’ by putting away the traditions of men and following instead the commandments of YHWH! That will insure the First Fruits offerings are ripe and ready in the fields of Israel in their season “according to the blessing of YHWH your Elohim which He has given you”. It is sad to say but I don’t expect this to happen until Messiah Yahusha rules on His throne during the Millennial Reign. Although the Israelites must not eat of the newly harvested barley until after the First Fruits offering is waved on the 16th Day of the 1st Month it’s obvious they must immediately begin the harvest once the crop is ripe lest they lose the crop to the ground.
Time Reckoned From Where?
There is another point I’d like to discuss beyond the main point I’ve already addressed from Exodus 12:1-2. I’d like to focus your attention temporarily on the fact that YHWH is reintroducing His method of time reckoning in the midst of EGYPT! Let that sink in for a moment... The reason for making this an issue is that there are those out there who demand that time be reckoned only from Jerusalem. And yet YHWH restores His method of time reckoning while the Hebrews are in EGYPT! And to take it a step further Mosheh, Aharon and the Hebrews will manage to reckon time for 40 years without ever observing YHWH’s mechanisms for time reckoning from the Promised Land of Israel, much less Jerusalem! Please understand and believe without a doubt, regardless of how remote a location you live in, or how disconnected from the rest of the world you may be, once an understanding of The Master’s Clock is regained you can know beyond a shadow of doubt what Day and Month of the Year it is. Don’t let anyone tell you Scriptural time reckoning for the entire planet must be done from Jerusalem.
The Present
IS NOT
The Key To The Past Or The Future!
Thirdly, as I read Scripture I am left with the impression that in the beginning things were very different. What I see in the beginning is a tropical paradise from pole to pole. If that is accurate, and rest assured I could be wrong, then it would seem to me that the earth’s axis of rotation had to have been perpendicular to the sun’s ecliptic plane with a possible canopy of some sort that helped to keep the earth’s temperatures uniform from pole to pole. From the beginning of creation inhabitants of the earth would have known of nothing but a ‘perpetual’ state of equinox. This tropical paradise due to a perpetual equinox was brought to an end via some cataclysmic event at the time of the Flood of Noah and our first notice of ‘seasons’ in the Scriptures is found shortly after the flood account in Genesis 8:22. That tells me that the earth’s canopy, if it existed, was destroyed and the earth’s axis of rotation was tilted sometime during the time frame of the flood resulting in the spring and autumn equinoxes and the summer and winter solstices that we now have. My expectation is that the earth will be restored to that tropical paradise state of being once the Millennial Reign has run it’s course. It is the only way that the agricultural harvests of both hemispheres can occur simultaneously and in harmonious synchronization with the Appointed Times, the Annual Festivals of YHWH, which correspond to the agricultural harvests of the barley, wheat, grapes, olives, pomegranates, figs and dates in Israel.
It is also clear from Scripture that the years and months have changed from their original count. According to 2 Kings 20:8-11, where King Hezekiah asks for a sign confirming his healing, Isaiah asks Hezekiah which way he wanted the shadow on Ahaz’s sundial to go, forward or backward? He chose ‘backwards’ and the result, which is confirmed by cultures around the world having to modify their calendars around the year 705 B.C.E., is that the day count of the year is forcefully extended from 360 to 365.25 days per year. My expectation would be that the year will be restored to 360 days prior to the Millennial Reign during the Great Tribulation in the future when catastrophic events on earth will take place once again. To be more specific, my expectation is that the year will be restored to 360 days when The Great Earthquake of Revelation 6:12 takes place at the mid-trib point. I believe that The Great Earthquake will occur at the very beginning of some future year, i.e. the 1st Day of the 1st Month in the spring. The reason for my saying this is that all of the prophecies related to the tribulation are couched in either 3.5 years, 42 months or 1260 days. In order for the prophecies to make any sense the year has to be restored to 360 days and the months restored to 30 days, otherwise there is no harmony between the three different methods of counting utilized in the prophecies. These time counting prophecies must deliver us to the Moedim of the 7th Month in order for the return of Messiah Yahusha to fulfill the fall festivals of Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot and to do so The Great Earthquake must take place on or just before the 1st Day of the 1st Month of some future year.
So what does any of that have to do with how we mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons today? I have in the past proclaimed that...
‘IF’ there were no Equinoxes in the distant Past? AND...
‘IF’ there will be no Equinoxes in the near Future?
‘THEN’ why would anyone use today’s Equinoxes to mark the beginning of our New Years in the Present!???
It seems like a reasonable line of thought and may one day still have merit and yes, I was rather proud of that line and struck out according to the vain imagination of my own mind to establish a different method for beginning the New Year. And through the influence of others I concluded that the Full Moon rising in Virgo in the Spring would mark the beginning of the New Year. But then struggled with the vagueness of the method and decided that the 1st Full Moon to rise beneath the last star in Leo named Denebola, which would then be the 1st Full Moon to rise in Virgo, would mark the beginning of the New Year... But then over time realized the retrograde motion of the moon against the star-studded backdrop of the Mazzaroth would give different conclusions to observers separated by several hours east to west around the globe. One person may observe the Full Moon just above Denebola and declare a 13th Month and later that same evening another observer located far westward would clearly see the Full Moon below Denebola and declare the New Year. It just doesn’t work. And I don’t think it makes a nickel’s worth of difference whether you’re talking about the Full Moon rising above or below a specific point of light from a star or whether a vague line of demarcation is designated within a constellation, such as below the waist of Virgo or near the feet of Virgo. Furthermore, considering these methods from the southern hemisphere only makes matters worse since both Leo and Virgo are slightly North of the ecliptic plane of the sun while the moon will track South of the ecliptic plane on many years. Add to that the tilt of the ecliptic plane on the celestial sphere according to the observer’s latitudinal location on the face of earth and you start to get the idea... None of it works! Bare minimum, we have to remove the moon in positional relationship with the stars from the equation for determining which New Moon is the Beginning New Moon of New Moons. That is the sole responsibility of the positional relationship between the earth and sun alone. And honestly, this is Astronomy 101 or maybe even more infantile. The Full Moon will always beacon the 1st Day of every New Year but the earth’s position around the sun marks ‘which’ New Moon is the Beginning New Moon of New Moons!
Therefore, after a great deal of vacillating over the years I have concluded that the only mechanism we have available to us today, which can be used in both hemispheres, to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is the Vernal Equinox in the spring. When YHWH says to Mosheh and Aharon, “This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you, it is the first new moon of the year for you.” I am forced to ‘assume’ he has to be talking about the first Full Moon to have risen AFTER the Vernal Equinox in the spring, a Vernal Equinox Mosheh and Aharon would have been intimately aware of, Mosheh having served Pharaoh for 40 years and Aharon having lived in Egypt as a sojourner and slave all his life. This simple truth is an obvious truth. It’s reliable, it’s definite and it alone can harmonize people around the globe, east to west, and both hemispheres, north and south, as they mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons. That is a claim that no other phase of the moon in coordination with any other mechanism in heaven or on earth can claim! It's just common sense!
However, that is all in regard to the ‘present’ condition of the earth’s tilted axis in the sense of the ‘present’ being an epoch of time which began at the Flood of Noah and will continue to the end of the Millennial Reign. It begs the question and I have to ask, what was the mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons when there was no Vernal Equinox in the beginning? What was the mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons when the earth had a perpetual equinox, 360 days a year up until the flood? And if the earth’s axis of rotation is ever to be restored to a perpendicular relationship with the ecliptic plane of the sun after the Millennial Reign thereby restoring the earth to that state of perpetual equinox 360 days a year, what will be the mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons then?
Is there room in this discussion for some ‘unvarnished truth’? If the earth’s axis of rotation was tilted in the past via a cataclysmic event and will be restored in the future via another cataclysmic event then I don’t know what the mechanism for qualifying the 1st New Moon of the New Year was or will be or what the mechanism should be in the present day!
I am either wrong about the earth’s axis of rotation being tilted at the Flood of Noah and being restored at the end of the Millennial Reign, and if so then obviously the Vernal Equinox would have existed ‘in the beginning’ and will exist ‘in the end’, and is therefore a viable candidate for marking The Beginning New Moon of New Moons in all epochs of time including the present. Or... if the earth’s axis of rotation was indeed perpendicular to the sun's ecliptic plane in the beginning and will once again be restored in the end, and the Vernal Equinox is not the mechanism to qualify the next New Moon as the Beginning New Moon of New Moons in the present epoch of time, then there is either a mechanism out there that has been forgotten, which no one today has thought of yet, including myself. Or... there is a mechanism that resided in the sun, moon and stars as recently as the crucifixion of Messiah Yahusha but has been temporarily removed from our view but will one day be restored, a mechanism that is defined with an accuracy down to a day which serves both hemispheres.
Admittedly the Vernal Equinox comes with a lot of baggage, its strong association with paganism is a problem that will keep many from considering it as a candidate and although I certainly understand that I also know there is precious little in YAH’s set-apart Creation that hasn’t been profaned with paganism at some level. But there is another problem that I am mindful of and that is the lack of archeological support for the Vernal Equinox. You would think that if Israel used the Vernal Equinox as the mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons that there would have been an archeological discovery unearthing an equinox observatory by now. I know of no such discovery. Lastly, I know of no historical writings that would support the Vernal Equinox as a mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons for Israel. All in all it paints a pretty bleak picture of support for the Vernal Equinox being the mechanism to mark The Beginning New Moon of New Moons.
On the other hand, when considering the change in the length of the year, what I do know is that today, in the present, we have one constant, one unifying standard that could have transcended the change in the day count of the years from 360 to 365.25 in 705 B.C.E. and could transcend the change in the day count of the years from 365.25 back to 360 in the future when the mechanisms of THE MASTER’S CLOCK are partially restored during the tribulation period prior to the Millennial Reign, when the earth’s rotation on its axis (marking a day) is synchronized with the earth’s orbit around the sun (marking a year). That constant, that unifying standard, has been and will continue to be the Vernal Equinox! For the present time I know of no other mechanism that works as precisely as does the Vernal Equinox for marking The Beginning New Moon of New Moons.
To say that defaulting to the Vernal Equinox as the mechanism for establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons is frustrating is a complete understatement... but when you’re faced with such a lack of evidence for any other mechanism I am left with no other choice... at least for the time being. This is disappointing to say the least. I desperately want to show my Creator and Redeemer my heart’s desire to follow His ways and part of that is acknowledging His Annual Moedim via our best effort in rehearsing these feasts at their appointed times. In order to do that I have to have a starting point for every New Year and from this day forward I will mark that starting point via the 1st Full Moon to rise after the Vernal Equinox.
I refuse to be dogmatic about this decision, I will grant liberty to others who will disagree with this decision, I will leave the door wide open on this subject and, as always, if ever I find better evidence I will make whatever changes I need to make to get in alignment with the Creator, it is my earnest desire to know His ways and that certainly includes an understanding of how to read THE MASTER’S CLOCK!
The Method
The date of the Vernal Equinox is well documented and is easily available if you don’t happen to already know that it falls on the 20th of March on the pagan calendar. But for those, like myself who are so inclined and who have an area available, building an Equinox Observatory could be a fun little project. Is it mandatory for each and every one of those of us who want to follow YHWH’s time keeping mechanism in the heavens to build an Equinox Observatory? Of course not! Could there ever be a scenario when you would need an Equinox Observatory in order to determine the Vernal Equinox, it’s very possible! When The Great Earthquake of Revelation 6:12 occurs I believe the years will be restored to 360 days and I would imagine that the Vernal Equinox could very well land on a date other than the 20th of March. It might be good to know!
So how do we 'observe' the Vernal Equinox? The safest and easiest way to do this is to use a shadow from a stylus cast by the sun onto a wall rather than looking directly at the sun. You’ll start off by pounding a stake in the ground! Literally! Go to your elevated observation point and permanently pound a stake in the ground anywhere you please but it must be permanent enough to remain fixed without disturbance and it’s position should be such that there is sufficient room east of the stake, which we’ll call the ‘Stylus’, to develop the rest of our Equinox Observatory. Eastward of the ‘Stylus’ you’ll need to construct a wall, this may be a semi-circular wall and if so it needs to be positioned according to any given radius of the ‘Stylus’ and of such height that the shadow of the ‘Stylus’ will fall on it during sunset. If you choose to build a straight wall it will need to be constructed on a North/South coordinate at whatever distance from the 'Stylus' you choose. Once you’ve done that over the course of time you must establish the Summer and Winter Solstices. When the Summer and Winter Solstices draw near (June 20/21 and December 21/22 respectively) you must mark the position of the shadow cast by the ‘Stylus’ at sunset each evening until the furthest Northern and Southern locations are defined. Once the Summer and Winter Solstice locations have been plotted and are permanently marked on the Indexed Wall of Seasons the distance between them is divided equally in two and another permanent marker must be positioned at that point. This equidistant index becomes your ‘Equinox Point’. Both the Vernal Equinox (March 20) and the Autumnal Equinox (September 22/23) will fall on the centered ‘Equinox Point’ on your Indexed Wall of Seasons as the sun casts the shadow of the 'Stylus' at sunset. The scale of the Equinox Observatory is strictly up to you but the larger it is the more accurate it will be.
When the setting sun begins to swing back toward the North from its Winter Solstice position in the South the shadow of the ‘Stylus’ will eventually, that is in approximately 3 months time, cross the Equinox Point index on the Indexed Wall of Seasons at sunset. We must remember that the Equinox is actually a moment in time, which can occur day or night. It is not a day but does occur on a date. It is the moment in time when the Ecliptic Plane of the sun crosses the Cardinal Direction of Due West on the Western Horizon. For my purposes here, I am utilizing the Western Horizon/Sunset rather than the usual Eastern Horizon/Sunrise scenario because I want to know whether the Equinox has occurred during the day leading up to a possible sighting of the Full New Moon beacon that evening after sunset. By using the Western Horizon and Sunset rather than the Eastern Horizon and Sunrise I can insure that the earliest opportunity to mark the New Year exists, even as rare an occasion as that may be. The Equinox must occur prior to the New Moon beacon for a New Moon beacon to beacon a New Year. Any Full Moon that beacons a New Moon from that evening on would be considered The Beginning New Moon of New Moons, i.e. the 1st New Moon of the New Year.
Vernal Equinox Observatory Model
The Conclusion
Having rejected the Jewish Hillel II calculated calendar with it’s ‘Postponement Rules’ as well as the Karaite tradition of the Aviv Spring Barley search and the Full Moon rising in formation with any given location on the star field of the Mazzaroth and having considered the scant Scriptural support as well as the stunning lack of historical and archeological evidence to support ANY method for establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons I will default to the VERNAL EQUINOX in the Spring as ‘the one and only’ method that can harmoniously establish The Beginning New Moon of New Moons. Until further notice, I will utilize the 1st Full New Moon to rise AFTER the VERNAL EQUINOX as the 1st New Moon of the New Year for all people on planet earth. At least for now...
Therefore, according to the corrections made to THE METHOD For Establishing The Beginning New Moon of New Moons in this article we can, via nothing more than personal, visual observation of THE MASTER’S CLOCK, hope to keep The Appointed Times at their appointed time!
So there you have it,
"The self-evident, simple man’s
observational, as well as technologically free,
the way it oughta be,
METHOD For Establishing
The Beginning
New Moon of New Moons!"
